If you are accused of commiting a criminal offence it is important that you obtain legal advice. In most investigations you have a right to silence ( a right against self incrimination). You are also entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

It is the investigators job to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt. In many cases even if the evidence supports a view that you have committed an offence, there may be several charges made by police that are not supported by evidence. As a result it is important to appoint a lawyer as it may be the difference between being sentenced to time in Prison or staying out of Prison. More often than not several charges may be struck out or withdrawn.

Until your case is heard, in many cases it also important to make a bail application with proper supporting evidence. If a bail application is rushed you may miss out on the opportunity to be released from custody until the your matter is finalised with a trial or sentencing hearing.

In relation to sentencing options in many cases it may be your first time before the courts. The court has discretion to dismiss charges or make an order for no conviction.
